Chuseok and not so good

Mood: not good.

This was not the best weekend of my life.

I need to decide where I'm going for Chuseok because I'm going to be booking tickets either tonight or tomorrow. I think I have it narrowed down to (in no particular order) Hong Kong/Macau, Singapore, and Shanghai. None of these places are my first choice and I'll be traveling alone, but whatever. I'm a big boy. I can deal with it.

In a perfect world I'd be going to Malaysia for Chuseok. Then again, I'd also have a full 9 days off and I wouldn't have to come back to work for one fucking day before the weekend. Since this isn't a perfect world, tickets to Malaysia are obnoxiously expensive and I think I'll be saving that trip for a future vacation.

Hong Kong/Macau: Megan went to Hong Kong and enjoyed it. It's expensive but fascinating. I think I could probably manage to get by just fine there. A possible itinerary: 2 days in Hong Kong, 1 day in Macau, and 1 day in Shenzhen (mainland China). I love architecture and the British/Portuguese colonial remains should be right up my alley.

Singapore: It's expensive and modern. 4 days there might be too much, but then again it'd be the perfect about of time to see the entire country without any problems. One of the reasons Malaysia fascinates me so much is because of the interesting combination of religions and ethnicities which reside there, and Singapore strikes me as having a similar feel. It's so close to Malaysia that I could hop up to Johor Baharu or Malacca (5.5 hours by train) without any troubles. A possible itinerary: 1 day in Singapore, 2 days in Malacca, 1 day in Singapore. The problem with this itinerary-- I'd be losing well over 11 hours to traveling to Malacca and back. Not sure how I feel about that.

Shanghai: I was talking about doing Shanghai/Beijing with Jodi a while ago but she backed out. I would love to see the World Expo, but then again, in just a couple years it'll be in Yeosu - not that far from Gwangju. Seemingly half the people I know in Korea are going, or are planning to go, to Shanghai for Chuseok. I don't know how I feel about that. I feel very uncomfortable about traveling in China by myself. I doubt it would be much worse than traveling alone in Korea, but whatever.

Flight Prices: Shanghai is the cheapest, Singapore is the most expensive. Shanghai becomes about even with Hong Kong when you factor in the cost of the visa. Singapore and Hong Kong seem to be about equally as expensive once you're actually there and buying food, etc.

Interest level: about the same all around.

Flight times: not bad, not great.

Some other trip options: Thailand again (going up to Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai), maybe staying in Korea and visiting Gangwon-do/Seoul/Busan, going to an island somewhere, damn the price!

To cut your costs down, you should try couchsurfing. I don't know if you've done that already but it's safe and you get to meet a lot of people who can show you things you wouldn't have found yourself. www.couchsurfing,org Make a profile and send requests. Add me and I'll write you a reference.

Another friend also suggested couchsurfing... I don't know how I feel about it honestly. I like the idea of meeting up with locals, but I'd rather have my own place. I'll think about it... thanks.
