Shopping, a lack of sleep, and TV.

Mood: tired

I did a shitload of shopping today. Holy shit levels of shopping. I loathed every minute of it. KOREA YOU BETTER BE WORTH THE SUFFERING I WENT THROUGH TODAY FOR YOU. On the plus side, I got a shitload of clothing and various toiletries (shaving cream, razor blades, chapstick, etc). I still need to buy a new pair of shoes, a Korean/English dictionary, and maybe another suitcase, but beyond that I'm good to go.

I got a total of 30 minutes of sleep last night, and I napped for about 2.5 hours today. I'm relatively awake right now, which is probably a good thing considering how I'll be moving 13 hours ahead in a few days.

I don't talk much about my TV habits, do I? Well, I have them. Mostly I don't watch shows on TV, but I watch them online the next day. But even this is limited to a, um, fairly limited number of shows.

Shows I keep up with while they're being shown (PLZ DON'T JUDGE ME!!!):
- anything Top Model-related (America's, Australia's, Britain's, Canada's, New Zealand's)
- anything Project Runway/fashion-related (America, Australia, Canada, Britain; The Fashion Show, Launch My Line)

Shows I typically watch when the season is over:
- Bones
- Survivor
- True Blood

Shows long dead that I will forever love:
- Firefly
- Popular
- Veronica Mars

Shows that were good for a season or two but jumped the shark and I quit watching them:
- Gray's Anatomy (seasons 1+2 were great. After that... no.)
- House

Shows that were good but for whatever reason I quit watching and I should probably try to catch up:
- Criminal Minds
- Supernatural (I got my parents into the show but I still haven't seen seasons 3 or 4)
- Ugly Betty

Shows I'm keeping up with right now:
- Launch My Line (ugh, I'll probably drop this shit soon)
- Survivor
- White Collar

In preparation for Korea - and the possibility of not having internet access (which, while slight, is still possible) - I am attempting to find some new shows to watch/love/obsess over.

Today I watched the first episodes of The Good Wife and Nurse Jackie. Both were fantastic, and I intend to keep watching... well, until they bore me. Totally shipping Alicia/Will in TGW, btw. I also have Glee and Wonderfalls, but I'm saving them for Korea.

There are a few shows I'm thinking about trying out. In no particular order: Twin Peaks, Six Feet Under, Carnivale, and Dexter. I'm a little hesitant about the HBO shows, because they tend to be hit or miss. (Seriously, people. Just because you CAN have an explicit sex scene every episode doesn't mean you SHOULD.) I also tried out Dexter a few years ago and didn't really like it, but there's no reason not to give it a try.

What TV shows do you all watch? Any recommendations/thoughts/comments?

I've never followed ANY shows as they air until now.... Well, even now I'm not really right on track with, but I am more or less keeping up with the following, via internet:

The Office
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory (probably my fave)
Community

I'm also about to start Modern Family and Glee. I'd recommend any of these to you - I'm pretty sure you'd like them. They all appeal to a similar taste in humor (imo), though I've had friends who like The Office say they aren't as found of The Big Bang Theory (that might be because this show has a laugh track, ugh) or 30 Rock. Let me know what you think! :)

TBH I HATE The Office. I know, I'm a horrible 20-something, but whatev. I'm not really a sitcom person - I prefer longer shows with ongoing plots, etc. (I have watched a few episodes of The Big Bang Theory. I found it funny but it didn't quite hit the spot, you know? I tried watching Community as well - for Joel McHale - but I missed a week and didn't bother watching again.) 30 Rock doesn't really interest me so I haven't tried it out, and Modern Family,,, well, maybe I'll give it a chance. idk.

Thanks for the recs though!

Oh man, we should watch Glee together~like, start the episodes at the same time and talk via gmail. hahaha that'd be AMAZING (and yet totally nerdy)

Oh man, if you have never watched Twin Peaks before, you should go out, get the series, watch the whole thing. Do it marathon style. Don't go anywhere, just hole up with snacks, maybe booze and watch it.

Seriously, it's the best series ever. I watch it, easily, once a year.

Yeah, that's what I've heard before - it looks like the sort of show I'd enjoy, so if I get the opportunity I will definitely watch it! (It'll be a while before that happens though... idk when I'll find the time to download all these shows.)

I LOVED Six Feet Under. One of my favorites. But it definitely has that problem with unnecessary naked people and sex in every episode.

Yeah, it looks really good. I just hate the unnecessary naked people/sex thing that HBO loves so much. Now that someone I know recommends it I'll push it up the DL list, though. thanks!

Glee and Castle are both currently-airing favorites. If you don't mind bootlegging, BBC's Merlin is cracktacular good fun (and with far more sexual tension between Merlin and Arthur than there really ought to be).

Thanks for the recs!

Wonderfalls was good. Too bad it was so short.
I, once again, suggest you look into Crossing Jordan. And obvs Due South is great too.
Do you watch anime at all?

I watched some episodes of Crossing Jordan a few years ago (um, 2005-2007ish) but I didn't really fall in love with it. Is it a show you have to watch from the beginning to really love?

I've never seen Due South before, but based on the wiki article it looks really good! I'm definitely going to give it a try. thanks for the rec(s)!

no, I'm not into anime... I've tried a number of times (back in the day) and the only one I ever liked was Card Captor Sakura. and that wasn't really an anime.

I have or am currently watching all but 3 of the shows you listed above [True Blood, Survivor, Criminal Minds]. I am in love with The Good Wife. I also loved the first 2 seasons on Dexter, but I'm with you about HBO/Showtime shows and the unnecessary amounts of sex, violence & gore.. sometimes it seems like those shows do it just because they CAN and that irritates me.

It seems you like the hour-long dramedy type stuff so I'd suggest Friday Night Lights [!!], Everwood, West Wing. You might like Psych, but it might be too silly for you. I also love Glee and have heard great things about Wonderfalls... it is in my Netflix queue so if you get to it before me, let me know what you think. :)

Wow - you definitely nailed the type of show I like (hour-long dramedy). I tried the first episode of the first season of Friday Night Lights but I didn't like it - but that was maybe 4.5 years ago, so I'll give it another chance. I've always confused Everwood with Deadwood, but now that I see what it's actually about I think I'd really like it! I've never given West Wing a chance, but I think I'll also try it out as well.

You're completely right about Psych - I tried to watch it but it was just too silly. Have you seen the Mentalist? Apparently it's a take on Psych.

I second the West Wing

I'm madly in love with british television on youtube, so you'll have to bear with me:
I recommend Peep Show, a British comedy which I adore. The first five seasons are found with this user. There is a sixth season, but it's getting to the point where I think it might be aware of how clever it is.

Also, Black Books. It takes a while to get into, but is well worth it.

Two for West Wing = it'll be bumped up the list. Thanks :)

I'm not a big fan of British humor, but - and this is a HUGE coincidence - I was JUST reading my LJ friend's page and one of my friends posted a fanfic crossover which included Black Books. That was literally the last post I read before I saw your comment. I think the coincidence is great enough that I'll have to check it out.

currently I watch all 3 CSIs, House, the Mentalist, Castle, 24 religiously. This year I've grown fond of V and FlashForward as well.

V looks pretty good... but I don't want to start watching it until their "hiatus" is over. I don't want to forget everything between now and March (April?). FlashForward... I'll give it a chance, maybe. Since you're not the only one reccing the Mentalist + Castle, they'll be pushed up the list as well.

Thanks for the recs!

You and I are the same way with True Blood and I',m happy about that because all my friends tell me to download the shit but I like seeing it when i'm able to buy it. Thank god for pre-order.
I started to watch Nurse Jackie when I was in my apartment and I hate how I can't watch it now because I don't have Showtime.

I totally recommend watching Dexter again. As for new shows, I'm more into older ones like Twilight Zone and Dark Shadows.

Yeah, I used to download all of the shows I watched but then I didn't have regular internet access and lost that opportunity... so now I usually just buy seasons of new shows. I am, however, stocking up on new shows via bittorrent, because I'd like to have some just in case I don't have internet access in Korea.

I'm a little surprised by how much I like Nurse Jackie. She's a horrible person (normally adulturers piss me off to the point of not being able to look past that to see their other qualities) but Jackie has such a great personality beyond that (er, for TV) that it's kinda worth it.

I guess I'll try out Dexter again... if I can find season 1 somewhere. :x

Maybe you'll get into Korean dramas while you're gone ;-) My Asian roommates were obsessed with one called "Full House".

I don't watch much TV..at the moment I'm only watching The Colbert Report and then in February I'm going to start watching Lost again.

Haha, I second Amanda's comment - you should definitely watch some Korean dramas while you're there! (You're on your way right now, OMG!) Full House is kind of cheesy and funny, but I really like one called Hong Gil Dong - it's kind of silly at times but the main plot is actually pretty serious. And a friend of mine loves a show called Capitol Scandal, about Korea in the 1940's. You also might like "Life on Mars" - the British version is really good, but I don't know about the American one. :) Let us know when you get to Korea!! You have to get Skype!!

Ok, I finally finished reading all these comments, omg there are so many! I wanted to make sure i read everything so i could suggest some shows others may not have mentioned. Tv shows are my thing, i love prime time tv! im a nut i know, but i love it.

Lets see...The Mentalist is awesome. Give it a chance. There IS good humor in it and Simon Baker is amazing. I love him in just about everything he does. I've been smitten with him for years. lol.
Castle is really good too. I love this show, one of my new favs. There isn't a character i don't like in the show, which is hard to come by. The grandma in it is too freakn funny. i just really enjoy watching it. =)
I like the Good Wife as well...its not my favorite show but i DO like it. My aunt told me it may get canceled though. She says its due to a lack of a younger audience watching it. So, if you think its good, watch it! and tell everyone you know to watch it too.
I hate The Office and i got so excited when i read that you don;t like it either. (just felt like adding that.)
I really like One Tree Hill. I know it may not be the kinda show ur looking for, but i love drama. as long as its not my own, i love it. The current season is frustrating me a bit, but every other season i have loved.
I like Dollhouse, but that is getting canceled, which i am not happy about.
There is a new show on tnt i am trying to get into called Men of a Certain Age. I am starting to like it, i think. it is a bit slow but im hoping it picks up.
I will always love Desperate Housewives, even if it does get a bit nutty at times. It is still a very entertaining show.
I really liked White Collar and can't wait for it to come back on. I think it's starting again in January. =)
Bones! Yes, i love that show as well. I will take David Boreanaz any day. He is so pretty.
There is a show called Dead Like Me that katie and i watched together a couple years ago, we really liked that. We also watched Eureka. I think it may still be currently on, but im not sure. When I moved to England i kinda lost track of that show.
My all time favorite show is, Alias. I love it and will always love it. I re watch it all the time and will never sell it. I want my children to watch it and their kids and so on and so on. Don't judge me!
So, I have no idea if any of that helps but i hope it does.

I love how, of ALL of the posts in my journal, THIS is the one that has received the most comments - ever. I'll try out The Mentalist and Castle, definitely. I really enjoy the Good Wife! The acting is superb. I don't necessarily think it's a show meant for younger people, but I could see why it might need more of an audience... holy crap, you hate The Office too? Woohoo! One Tree Hill - I don't know if I'm going to try that one. Maybe. I'm not into that sort of show usually.

Men of a Certain Age just looks kind of... eh. I'm not a fan of Desperate Housewives. White Collar could be SO good! I really like it, but it just kind of misses the mark. Like, the two main characters are starting to fall into cliches - the ridiculously smart, suave, flirtatious criminal and the bumbling cop. Remember the first episode when they had the lesbian coworker? I wish they still had her - simply so there would be at least one character Caffrey wouldn't flirt with. I like Bones a lot of course! I LOVED Dead Like Me back when it was one.

I haven't seen Eureka, or heard of it. I'll look into it... I've honestly never seen an episode of Alias. (Don't judge ME! haha) Maybe I'll try it out.

Thanks for the super helpful comments! You're awesome! <3
