fraught with danger

Mood: moody

Last night I got out of bed in the dark and slammed my nose into the back of a chair. It hurts to wear my glasses and the nose pads are out of alignment. Or maybe it's my nose that's out of alignment?

My foot is still bugging me. I suspect that I won't be doing the half marathon I had planned. Oh well. I guess I can go back to increasing my long runs by 0.5 miles now. Or whatever.

I inquired into the job in Gimhae but haven't heard back about it yet. With my luck the recruiter probably said, "Fuck this guy," and threw out my resume.

This makes me feel good:
Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you."

That Piglet thing is super cute. It made me smile.

I always tend to smack my temples into sharp points on things. I have a bruise on the right side of my head and I have no clue where it came from. Hopefully your nose isn't out of alignment and it's just the glasses.

Same here re: Piglet.

Ack! I hate getting injuries and not knowing where they came from. Although it does let you make up fun stories about them (e.g. "I got this bruise in a bar fight," haha). I'm pretty sure my glasses are out of alignment... they got smashed back into my eyes when I hit my face. Probably should get them fixed...

are you allowed to apply to all three of the schools and then choose if more than one accepts you? maybe one of them will want you and you'll be out of here. I would sacrifice the two vacation days for the fact that you'd be at a good location and have a job. You've been on a sorta vacation for a long time now anyway.

no, I'm not... or else I would have, haha. I was lucky that this recruiter sends out info about all the schools they have, because most recruiters take your information and choose which schools they'll send it to for you. I personally don't think 8 vacation days is THAT bad, but 10 days is actually the bare minimum legally speaking. 8 days isn't a huge difference, but it's bordering on illegal as it is.

Yeah, all three schools have aspects of what I'm looking for, but none of them has it all. if I could find a mixture of all three schools, it would be perfect. But that's bordering on impossible at this point.

I'm actually starting to look toward applying tp the public school system, which requires reference letters. Prof. B has already agreed to write one, and I emailed Dr. J just last night. Public schools tend to be far better than private. AND that's what I was looking for in the first place.

:) So I saw this this morning and it made me laugh: http://xkcd.com/

So guess what I am thinking about doing next year? I'm applying to MA programs at Uni Hong Kong and... Oxford :) I really hope it works out because I don't really have a backup plan...

Oh, and any good music lately? I haven't really had time to find anything :(

Ooh, XKCD is always (well, sometimes) good! Some recommendations: http://www.questionablecontent.net (start from the beginning - the art gets much better very fast) and http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/ (AMAZING!!!!! Seriously, my all-time favorite comic, online or otherwise. You definitely need to start at the beginning though.)

Oooh! So exciting! You're planning to do Linguistics, correct? Are you going to apply to any schools in Japan or Germany (or Austria, or Poland)? Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get in somewhere... and if not, well, you can always try to find a job teaching abroad. And you'd probably be more successful than I've been. :(

Some music I've been into: La Roux (I'm Not Your Toy, Fascination), Eric Prydz (Pjanoo, Call On Me), and Yeasayer (2080 is absolutely STUNNING, Sunrise, Red Cave - everything!!!).

Oh thanks, I'll check out those comics. Yep, I'm planning to do linguistics - after I get my MA I'll probably come back to the States for my PhD (and then spend a semester or two abroad for research :) ). I don't know if I'm going to apply anywhere else. I can't really think of anywhere else I want to apply - I don't want to go back to Germany (I love the country but I'm not really eager to spend more time in the university system), there are like almost no linguistics programs in Japan (what is up with that???) and I don't speak Polish well enough to study there... and even if I did the Polish university system sounds kind of scary and intense from what I've heard from my friends (like 50% of people fail out in the first year of undergrad...). So yeah, I'm pretty much banking on Oxford or Hong Kong, and if that doesn't work out, like you said, I'll look for a job. I should know on Oxford by Jan. 15, so that gives me a lot of time.

Wow, this is a long comment, sorry... oh but as a closing note, if you're still in the country you should come down for Russian Club dinner (Dec. 6) and help us cook. Just hop on Amtrak and we'll pick you up in La Plata, and you can stay with us! It will be awesome - you know you want to come!

Practically no Linguistics programs in Japan? Seriously? That IS really weird. Well, good luck with Oxford & Hong Kong! (But--one question: why Oxford? Why not Cambridge/St. Andrews/Edinburgh as well?)

Ooh, if I'm still in the country in December I may just take you up on that offer! That'd be a lot of fun - plus I'd get to see Kville again (which I strangely miss... sigh). To say nothing of Russian Club/you and Amanda and the other Amanda! How is Russian Club doing this year? Do you have a lot of new members?
