Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn died yesterday (or perhaps today). I find this rather depressing. If you haven't read any of his novels (I recommend Cancer Ward to start), I strongly recommend that you do. The man was a genius. He also had ridiculously bad luck. Coincidentally, when I took the OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) yesterday, I spent some time discussing him and his novels with the interviewer. I actually think I might have received some bonus points, simply for the fact that I knew quite a bit about Solzhenitsyn himself. What a way to start the day.

But yeah, the OPI went really well, actually. My speaking skills have definitely improved, and the situation part of the interview lasted, oh, two minutes. We spent more time discussing what makes children become serial killers than anything else. (This also counts as studying for my Conversation final, since I'll be discussing the same thing there. Am I amazing at multitasking or what?) On the other hand, I forgot how to say doctor (vrach/врач) and week (nedelya/неделя), but I managed to get around those words without too much trouble.

I think I understand verbs of motion now. Basically, verbs like idty (идти), plyt' (плыть), and ekhat' (ехать) are progressive in English (I am walking, I am swimming); verbs like khodit' (ходить), plavat' (плавать), and ezdit' (ездить) are iterative (I often fly, I run three times a week - repetition, basically); and verbs like poyti (пойти), poplyt' (поплыть), and poekhat' (поехать) are all progressive (I walked to the bakery yesterday, I drove to Moscow, etc). Today we'll be learning prefixes, so it's a good thing I semi-understand this stuff now, or I'd be totally screwed later today.

Now... time for class.

The cases are definitely one of most difficult parts of Russian... it took me 1.5 years to actually understand when to use them. But, over time, it becomes second nature. I don't think I'd be able (or willing) to do Japanese - far too much effort for my taste, haha.

Ah, thank you! I'm glad I haven't died either, haha. Although it's certainly been close...

I actually just learned about Solzhenistyn (like a few weeks ago)! I was going to start with reading "One Day In the Life Of..." but I'll take your word about "Cancer Ward".

glad the OPI went well!

Thanks!

Oh, Solzhenitsyn is FANTASTIC. I loved Cancer Ward, but I know people who really enjoyed One Day in the Life as well... on the other hand, I know people who hate him. (But they're idiots. So. :P)

yeah..I hate it when I forget simple words of a language, too. I think Cancer Ward was on the list of books to read this summer that you made me..but I didn't entirely get around to a lot on that list yet. But now I finally can. Hopefully, I'll get to Cancer Ward before I go to Germany.

Cancer Ward is AMAZING. Read it read it read it! But yeah, I hate forgetting easy words as well. Wish it didn't happen quite so often...
