I would like to urge everyone to go read this letter to the editor (entitled "New Romance Language Major Shuns Other Modern Languages"). Why? Because I wrote it.

I've gotten three (3) comments on it today--one from Kel, a fellow Russian/French person, who agrees with me; one from my Russian professor, who apparently wants me to rise up against The Man and officially propose a Modern Languages major... and to learn a few dozen languages, spend 20 years abroad, and take over the world while I'm at it (no, seriously, I wouldn't be at all surprised if she would support this); and one from the head of the Interdisciplinary Studies major, who suggested that I make an appointment with him and "discuss my options" re: designing my own major. The latter two also suggested that I major in Linguistics.

The issue with majoring in Linguistics is this: for me, the joy of languages is learning them. I learn to use. I could write a massive tome on my intense adoration for languages and communication in general. To put it bluntly, while I like languages, I don't like language itself.

So, uh, yeah, I'm going to look into making my own major. If all goes well, I can focus on French and Russian and be able to pick up another language (or three!) just for the hell of it. Heck, with the free space in my schedule, I could pick up that Women's and Gender Studies minor I've been eying, or maybe Art History...

On a completely different topic, I hope to get some serious outlineage done tonight. Preferably before it snows, 'cos srsly, walking from the West Campus Suites is hard enough with ice... but with snow covering said ice? Fuck that shit. And now I shall go study Russian. Au revoir, mes copains.
