1 month in Korea

Mood: disgruntled

I've been here in Korea for over a month now and I'd say I'm doing well. I have friends, I'm learning the language (I just got a perfect score on a verb test), and I like my job. All in all, that's better than I'd originally expected.

Over the weekend it was Nigel's birthday, so on Saturday a group of us - me, Nigel, Megan, Zandra, and Jodi (the usual suspects) - went out barhopping. It was pretty fun. We ended up having dinner at a Japanese place, then we went to a soju bar, a foreigner bar, a convenience store, and then another foreigner bar, where we danced until 2am. Good times. In spite of the obnoxious amounts of alcohol consumed (various shots of soju, vodka, beer...) I never got drunk. Sunday we all went out for Shabu Shabu, which is incredibly delicious. If you haven't had Shabu before, I recommend you go. Now. Or else.

When I got to my wintercamp class today one of the two girls in the class was laying on the floor, sobbing. Another boy was clutching his crotch. Apparently they'd gotten in a fist fight. I'll say this much for Korea: at least the kids practice equality in beating up each other.

The semester ends at the end of February, which gives us a - 5, 6? - day vacation. In other circumstances I'd probably be off to Cambodia or Mongolia, but I'll only have received one paycheck by then so that won't be happening. Instead, Jodi's birthday is March 1st and it looks like we'll be celebrating it by spending four or five days in Seoul drinking and exploring. No guarantees that this will happen for sure, but so far it looks optimistic. And if it doesn't happen, well, maybe I'll go to Seoul anyways.

Oh, and I just heard about that Republican winning the race in Massachusetts. I am coming THIS CLOSE to disowning you, America. First the gay marriage failures in Maine, New York, and New Jersey - then the complete and utter failure that is the health care bill - and now this. Step up the liberal policies or I won't come back. And that's a promise.

I know! it doesn't feel that long...

Shabu is hot pot. Basically you have a big pot of boiling broth and you add vegetables in - and then thin meat. Then you dip it out and eat it by dipping it into a sauce (a soy sauce, wasabi, or this salsa-ish sauce). It's DELICIOUS. Phenomenal. Amazing. Here's the wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabu-shabu

good point. it's so tempting though. I don't know how I'd feel if Illinois bans gay marriage... I honestly don't think I'd be able to go back.

thanks!! I'm so amazed that it's been a month & that I'm actually doing this.

Shabu-shabu is also the Japanese and Filipino slang name for meth. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

You can try to change what Korean kids call drugs in English though.
