English books are much cheaper in America.

Mood: sinus-y

So every semester I give the two best students in each class a present. Last semester I gave books by Diana Wynne Jones, but this time I decided to vary it up a little. I just spent over $100 on books from Amazon. So much cheaper than Korea...

Bunnicula by Deborah Howe
Maniac McGee by Jerry Spinelli
The Boggart by Susan Cooper
Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsberg
Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix*
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

At the end of the semester, I'll write out the summaries of each of the books and give them to the best students. They can spend a day deciding which one they want... and then I'll gift them. I enjoyed all of these books when I was their age, so I hope they'll enjoy them too. (Books that narrowly missed making the cut include Alana: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce, Animorphs #1 by K.A. Applegate, and The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.)

* I distinctly recall reading this book in the fourth grade and sending an e-mail to the author from my AOL account. She replied back, thanking me for my message, and encouraged me to keep reading. I really respect her for doing that.
